The Generation X FAQ

Note: Some information is taken from the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline, as their isn't any real reason why the characters powers and abilities should be greatly different just due to different circumstances (other than things such as the damage to Chamber was relatively minimal in Age of Apocalypse etc.)

1) What is Generation X?

Generation X (henceforth referred to as "Gen-X"), is a monthly comic-book produced by Marvel comics containing the exploits of the group of Mutants who comprise Gen-X, one of the spin-offs from the popular X-Men/Uncanny X-Men comic book series. The first issue was dated November 1994, and released September 1994. The cover was a double-length picture (front & back) Chromium cover (Marvels first of the sort), and the issue sold for US $3.95 or $5.35 Canadian. From issue #2 the standard issue price was $1.95 with the advent of the new "Deluxe" (glossy paper) format with computer-enhanced color separation. Gen-X was created by Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachalo.
Gen-X consisted originally of Chamber, Husk, Jubilee, M, Skin & Synch, with semi-members being Banshee and the White Queen who act as the teachers of the group (see their respective entries in this file for more information. They all reside at Xaviers School for Gifted Youngsters in Massachusetts, which is the training ground and home for the members of Gen-X. The original school in Salem Center, New York, is now known as Xaviers Institute for Higher Learning. It is said that the members of the Gen-X team will eventually become some of the most powerful beings on the planet.

2) Why does it exist?

Gen-X was started due to a cooperative effort between Banshee (See 3.0), the White Queen (See 3.9), and the original X-Men. Professor Charles Xavier handed the title of teacher over to Banshee who is now headmaster of the new Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. One of the major reasons for the formation of the new school is due to the destruction of a previous group of students formed by the White Queen called the Hellions, who were (mostly) destroyed due to their lack of combat experience, due to the White Queens "shoot now, ask questions later" approach which she has reflected upon since the incident. The actual purpose of Gen-X is to train young mutants in proper, and safe usage of their powers, so that they don't un-intentionally damage those around them, or even themselves, and so that they can use their powers for self- preservation if necessary (i.e. defensive/offensive use against the "bad-guys"). Also to prevent the students from joining any of the various evil mutants for whatever reason.
The time at which Gen-X was formed was during the early parts of the storyline "The Phalanx Covenant", which consisted of a four-part section sub-titled "Generation NeXt" (which ran from Uncanny #316 thru X-Men #36, Uncanny #317 & finished in X-Men #37, which showed the origins of the Gen-X team), a three-part section sub-titled "Life Signs", (running from X-Force #38, X-Factor #106 and finishing in EXcalibur #82). And finished in the two-part section sub-titled "Final Sanction", (which was contained in Cable #16 and Wolverine #85).
The Gen-X team next appeared in Uncanny #318 in which the purpose was further established, and the characters essentially got to know each-other better, with the final decision from Skin (See 3.7) as to whether or not he would join the group. This was also the issue in which the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters was moved from New York to Massachusetts, and the old location became the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

3) Who is/was (The Gen-X team):

3.0 - Banshee

Real Name: Sean Cassidy
Characteristics: Male, light red hair (short), green eyes, light skin.
Age: ?
Nationality: Irish
Mutant Ability: Sonic scream (enables flight)
Banshee is one of the teachers of Gen-X. His mutant power is that of a sonic-scream, (capable of disintegrating steel, which he can direct to the target with incredible accuracy, and can vary the level of sound from barely audible levels to a level capable of being heard several miles away, this method can also be used to simply stun his opponents, bring them out of unconsciousness and in some cases, even hypnotise them by modulating the frequency of his "scream".) and by "riding" the sonic wave, he has the power of flight. In his day, he's been an "Interpol agent in Europe, Lord & Master of Cassidy Keep in Ireland, A police detective in New York City, a reluctant villain in Nashville, Tennessee, of all places, and finally a globe hopping mutant crusader." (Banshee, Uncanny #316). He was born & raised in Ireland and speaks with an obvious accent. Banshee has a daughter named Theresa (Siryn of X-Force) and his cousin is Tom Cassidy (Black Tom). He was an active member of the X-Men from Giant-Size #1, but left due to the temporary loss of his powers. After regaining his powers, he was generally referred to as an adjunct member. Banshee first appeared in X-Men (Vol. 1) #28.

3.1 - Chamber

Real name: Jonothan Evan Starsmore
Characteristics: Male, brown hair (medium length), brown eyes, light skin.
Age: 18
Nationality: British
Mutant Ability: Bio-psionic blast. Telepathic speech.
Chambers' mutant power is a bio-kinetic blast, which during his first experience with it, destroyed his chest and lower half of his face. Considering his situation, he seems to be taking things quite well. Due to his not having any mouth or vocal cords left, he "speaks" psionically, how he eats is yet to be explained. He joined Gen-X under recommendation from Professor Xavier. He has (some would say quite rightfully), an attitude problem, and is described as a "Psionic howl from the grave" type. Chamber is supposed to eventually gain a flight-pack created by Forge which uses his bio-energy as a power source, giving him flight capability.
Top

3.2 - Husk

Real Name: Paige Guthrie
Characteristics: Female, blonde hair (long), blue eyes, light skin.
Age: 17
Nationality: American (Kentucky)
Mutant Ability: Transitional bodymorph/perpetual metamorph
Husk is the younger sister of Cannonball (A member of X-Force, real name, Samuel Guthrie). Her mutant power manifests itself in a "transitional bodymorph" or "perpetual metamorph", the ability to shed her outer skin to reveal a new body beneath, which has in the past been used to save her life when her "outer" body has been damaged beyond normal chances of survival. The new body can consist of a completely different form, or a barely changed one, which lasts for around an hour, and is often highly unpredictable. The power appears to be capable of changing her into not only different forms, but entirely different substances, as during Alter-X, she morphs herself into some form of acid. Husk has at one time confronted the controller of the "Upstart Game", The Gamesmaster, suggesting a new game involving the next generation of mutants and those who guide them, this would suggest an almost certain confrontation between Gen-X and the Gamesmaster. She tries to detach her identity from that of her brother, often correcting her southern accent, (she replaces "A'hm" with "I'm" or "I am" frequently as well as other changes). However, she does seem to want to follow in the footsteps of her brother, being able to use her powers for a useful purpose. She expresses good leadership abilities, and may have to contend with the rest of the team for the position, as well as her desire to eventually become one of the X-Men due to her hard training efforts (6pm jogs & study of the danger-sphere layout etc.). Depending on the form she morphs into, she can sometimes gain the power of flight. She has been described as a cross between Jean Grey and Will Rogers (a 30's comedian/commentator).

3.3 - Jubilee

Real Name: Jubilation Lee
Characteristics: Female, black hair (short), blue eyes, light skin.
Age: 13 "and a half"
Nationality: American (South California)
Mutant Ability: Pyrotechnics, stealth
Jubilee, is probably the best known character of the Gen-X team due to her association with the X-Men. Her parents were killed in a car accident, and she ended up in a state-home for a few months, before eventually running away and hiding out in a california mall, surviving by using her powers to entertain the kids. After being rescued from a group of would-be kidnappers (known as the M-squad), Jubilee managed to escape to Australia using a portal created by Gateway (Uncanny #244), and hid-out unknown to the X-Men amongst the buildings of their current home. Jubilee ended up saving Wolverine when the X-Men were attacked by the "Reavers" and he became a sort of father-figure to her. Former self-confessed California mall-rat, her mutant power is the ability to generate pyrokinetic energy, which usually manifests itself in fire-work like missiles. Her power is usually seen as little more than sparks, but has the capability to be quite destructive (During Gen-NeXt she tells of how she nearly destroyed a house in Hong-Kong (which happened in Uncanny #258 due to her anger at thinking her friend Wolverine dead), and Synch uses her power to obliterate some of the Phalanx in a huge explosion). She also has an extremely good ability of escaping detection from hostile pursuers, good enough so that she is able to elude electronic surveillance equipment (this seems to be a power that was used once or twice, and has since been given up on by the writers). She is also a well trained gymnast, is extremly agile as a result. One of her reasons for leaving the X-Men is due to the fact that Wolverine was no longer there to look after her in the fatherly manner she had grown accustomed to, and she realised that rather than relying on others, she should learn how best to use her powers to survive. Her favourite phrase is "When I was with the X-Men we used to..." (Gen-X #1). She is rarely seen without her yellow overcoat and bubble-gum. She appears to be the comedian of the group.
Top

3.4 - M

Real Name: Monet St. Croix
Characteristics: Female, black hair (long), brown eyes, tan skin.
Age: 16
Nationality: Algerian
Mutant Ability: Seemingly unlimited powers. Flight, Night-Vision, Strength, near omnipotence, photographic memory.
M is suspected to be the most powerful of the Gen-X team. She seems cool, calm & collected. She has displayed powers of flight, night-vision, incredible strength (suspected to rival that of the Juggernaut), extra-ordinary intelligence, and a photographic memory. One of her many mysteries, is that her mind is somehow shielded from being read telepathically or psionically. She seems almost too good to be true. As Bishop puts it, "M is perfect.. beautiful, brilliant, rich, seemingly in complete control of her powers.. it's almost... unnerving." (Bishop, Uncanny #318). Her family appears very wealthy, as her affinity for large quantities of fine clothing and other items suggests, (which were delivered to the school in several trucks). At least one of her relations is known to be extremely rich. Her almost perfect control and comprehension of her powers seems to suggest some form of prior training, perhaps from Gateway? She considers boys to be "Yucky", which at the age of 16 suggests something out of the ordinary (other than mutant powers). She is described as a cross between Jean Grey and Rainman. It has been revealed that M is the sister of Emplate and that she has/had two younger twin siblings and blames her father for the fate of the twins (which remains unknown at this time).
Top

3.5 - Mondo

Real Name: ?
Characteristics: Male, Brown Hair (medium), ? eyes, light-tan skin.
Age: 19
Nationality: Samoan
Mutant Ability: Absorbing mass from objects to enhance his own
Mondo's first appearance is in a brief interlude in Generation-X #3. His first appearance with the team is in Generation-X 95, where he decides to stay with the team after they rescue him. Mondo has an ability to absorb the mass of living objects in order to increase his own mass and strength, and remains in this state until he "digests" the extra mass. He has a "don't worry, be happy" attitude, which apart from helping to keep the rest of the team cheerful, lends him something of a poor survival instinct, which Banshee and the White Queen plan to help him with.
Top

3.6 - Penance

Real Name: N/a
Characteristics: Female, red "hair" (spikes), blue eyes, red "skin".
Age: 14
Nationality: Yugoslavian
Mutant Ability: light "vacuum", super-tough/sharp skin
Penance is currently a relatively unknown mutant who was rescued from the evil power-draining mutant Emplate by Gateway and dropped on the front lawn of the School. Her body is atrophied to a level of diamond-razor hardness and sharpness, making her physically untouchable. Her body contracts so far in on itself that it can absorb the light immediately around her, giving the appearance of her being always in shadow. She is able to "internalise" negative energy. Her "skin" is capable of cutting through incredibly tough substances (solid steel is little match for her, making her far sharper than Wolverines adamantium claws). She was convinced by Chamber to join Gen-X so that they could help her overcome some of the trauma she had experienced at the hands of Emplate. Emplate has revealed that her real name is Yvette. She also appears to be Emplate's "Meal of Choice" and somewhat succeptible to his will. She is prone to seizures which temporarily incapicitate her. Her pysche makes it difficult for most psionics to penetrate her pyschic defenses.
Top

3.7 - Skin

Real Name: Angelo Espinoza
Characteristics: Male, black hair (short), grey eyes, grey skin.
Age: 15
Nationality: American (South-Central Los Angeles)
Mutant Ability: Skin manipulation
Skin is a spanish/american boy with an excess quantity of skin, which he has the ability to manipulate into virtually whatever form he desires. He is able to keep his skin in a more-or-less normal form with a reasonably small level of concentration, and only completely loses control when extremely frustrated, in which case, his skin virtually melts off his body. Another property of this skin is that it is a dull-grey color, and when it is in its "normal" position, it appears wrinkled & prune-like. Angelo also smokes (cigarettes that is, not physically via a mutant power). It has been shown that Angelo has some dark secrets in his past, probably concerned with some form of illegal activities, as he wishes the idea that he is dead to remain the current thinking of his "buddies" in Los Angeles. He expresses a desire for this to be especially so in the case of someone named "Torre".
Top

3.8 - Synch

Real Name: Everett Thomas
Characteristics: Male, no hair, brown eyes, tan skin.
Age: 16
Nationality: American (St. Louis, MO)
Mutant Ability:Bio-Sympathetic Aura (Mutant detection and power "borrowing")
Synch, has the ability to take on the abilities of other mutants around him by altering his mutant "aura" to match that of the mutants around him. He is capable of using the powers of more than one mutant at a time. For example, during the Phalanx Covenant, he was simultaneously using Banshees' abilities of flight & sonic-scream, and utilising the enhanced mass of Sabretooth. The range of this power is not determined, but can reach further than for just a few meters, as he unknowingly used Banshees' power when Banshee was at least a couple of blocks away. He can also absorb energy that hits his body, and rechannel it for his own purposes, (redirect energy blasts towards his opponent etc.) as well as this, he is capable of extending his aura to detect the presence of other mutants in the area. He was a straight-A student before he accidentally synched with Banshee and blew out all the windows in his, and the surrounding blocks with a suddenly acquired sonic scream. He is able to use the acquired power(s) to a level as good as, and sometimes better than, the original "owner" of the ability, this was shown during the Phalanx Covenant when he uses Jubilees powers to generate a huge explosion, to a level that Jubilee doesn't dare generate (but *is* capable of). He is somewhat over-confident, but is able to stay calm in heated situations.
Top

3.9 - The White Queen

Real Name: Emma Frost
Characteristics: Female, white hair, blue eyes, light skin.
Age: ?
Nationality: American
Mutant Ability: Telepathy/psionics/telekinesis etc.
The White Queen, is an ex-X-villain, with incredibly powerful telepathic ability. She was one of the leaders of "The Hellfire Club", (a society of rich & powerful people, (of whom a large proportion were mutants) and a member of the "Inner Circle" who plotted to take over the world using their wealth & influence. This group was one of the X-mens greatest adversaries until they were eventually defeated. The members of this Inner Circle named themselves after Chess pieces, with Emma Frost obviously being the White Queen, Magneto as the White King (for a short time), Sebastian Shaw as the Black King and Selene as the Black Queen. There were other members, but these four were the main leaders. Only Emma Frost still uses her Inner-Circle name. Her powers include the ability to mask her, and often other peoples presence from those around her. She can also telepathically disguise herself, making her appearance to those around her quite different to what she actually looks like, (simple things such as changing the appearance of clothing, as well as more involved disguising). She is able to read minds extremely well, create various mental illusions, alter memories (she once helped to heal some of the New Mutants from severe depression by altering their depression-causing memories), control thoughts (forcing them to do whatever she wants), and she can also use powerful mind-blasts as a weapon which is a favourite trick. Essentially she has many of the powers that Professor Xavier does, but is not as skilled or powerful in their use. However, unlike Xavier, she has no compunctions against using her powers whenever, and for whatever she desires. She used to teach another mutant group, the Hellions. She seems to have little regard for others, but as hinted at by Professor Xavier, she may have more heart than she herself suspects. In Uncanny #314 her mind took-over the body of the X-Man Iceman, using his powers in ways he (Iceman) never knew of. This did no good for the White Queens mental state as for a few issues afterwards she had to be physically, and telepathically restrained. She owns a large corporation known as Frost enterprises and has a large "town-house" built atop a skyscraper on the West Coast of San Francisco, California, with a security system that "cost roughly half of the gross national product of Paraguay" (Uncanny #317). She is one of the teachers of Gen-X who prefers a more "hands-on" approach to the training . The White Queen first appeared in X-Men (Vol.1) #122.

3.10 - Artie & Leech

Real Name: Artie Maddicks and
Characteristics: Artie - Pink & Bumpy, Leech - Green, no visible nose
Age: ?
Nationality: Artie - American, Leech - Morlock
Mutant Ability:Artie - Telepathic picture projection, telepathic paralization. Leech - Mutant ability cancellation.
Artie Maddicks was about 10 years old when he suddenly became pink and bumpy, and developed the ability to project pictures. He also has enough telepathy to follow the actions of others, and paralyze them. Artie has been demonstrated to do these on pe ople as far as two miles away. Despite his great power, he is a very sensitive and caring boy, and terribly brave for his age. He is also shown to be quite resourceful, tracing his projections to leave messages. Leech was a member of the Morlocks, who li ved in the tunnels beneath New York. Leech has the ability to suppress the mutant ability of anyone in his range. Leech likewise is a brave and kindly soul who was not always happy with the Morlocks because his actions would sometimes cause great pain to the affected mutant (albeit indirectly). Leech and Artie bonded almost instantly, and have not been parted in any substantial way since. Artie's first appearance was in X-Factor #2, and Leech's first appearance was in X-Men #196. They first met each other in X-Factor #9.

4) Who is/was? (The good-guys)

4.0 - Blink

Real Name: Clarice Ferguson
Characteristics: Female, purple hair, light grey skin, blue eyes.
Age: ?
Nationality: ?
Mutant Ability: Spacial Shearing, Teleportation
Blink (real name, Clarice Ferguson - although during the Phalanx Covenant, her name was shown to be stored in Cerebro as Clarice Fergeson), was a short-lived character who gave her life to destroy the Phalanx known as Harvest, so that M, Husk, Skin, Jubilee, Synch, Banshee and the White Queen would have a better chance of surviving. Her mutant power was that of some form of multi-dimensional teleportation. She was able to shift sections of objects around in space, fragmenting them. She could also simply remove the object from normal space, causing it to end up who knows where. Blink is now presumably deceased. She first appeared in Uncanny #317, and died in X-Men (Vol. 2) #37 (One issue later).

4.1 - Gateway

Real name : ?
Characteristics: Male, grey/black hair, blue eyes, tan skin.
Age: ?
Nationality: Australian
Mutant Ability: Teleportation portals
Gateway, is a mysterious Australian aboriginal character who VERY rarely speaks. He is known to have spoken twice. "Hello Child" to Jubilee in Uncanny Annual #14, and "Penance" to Banshee in Gen-X #1, although he has telepathically had an entire conversation with Chamber. He is always seen to be sitting in a lotus position, and does little else other than creating portals large enough for several people to travel through at a time. He possibly has some sort of link to M (Relative?), due to the fact that in Gen-X #1 she refers to him as "Mentor". It is later revealed that Gateway has indeed trained M in the past. To what extent remains to be seen. He also plays the flute. Very little is known about him due to his lack of communication, although he seems to be hiding something from his past. Gateway first appeared in Uncanny #229.

5) Who is/was (The bad-guys)

5.0 - Emplate

Real Name: ?
Characteristics: Male, grey/black hair, yellow/red eyes, grey skin.
Age: ?
Nationality: ?
Mutant Ability: Absorbtion of mutant ability
Emplate was the first evil-mutant that the newly formed Gen-X team went up against. He was first encountered at Logan airport when Chamber arrived from Britain. Emplate then tried to absorb Chambers' mutant energy using his own mutant ability. He was driven off by the Gen-X team after he failled to detect who and what M was. He appears to be a powerful mutant, with the ability to siphon off the energies of other mutants as his source of sustenance. He held Penance captive for a long time, using her energies as his food before she was rescued by Gateway. He is also able to hide dimensionally, standing just outside of normal space, able to observe, but not be observed, and can enter normal space whenever he desires. As far as is known, Chamber and M have been the only mutants he has not been able to successfully absorb power from. Emplate has the ability to possess people to his will by using some sort of psychic vampirism technique. His captives exhibit his trademark "Mouths on the hands". He has also revealed that he is Monet's older brother. His driver, "DOA" is also a mutant, whos intentions and abilities are unknown. Emplate was first seen in Gen-X #1.

5.1 - The Phalanx

Name: Host independant
Characteristics: Host independant appearance, golden/metallic "skin".
Age: Host independant
Nationality: Host independant
Mutant Ability: N/a
Essentially, the Phalanx are (or more accurately, were) a horde of techno-organic creatures capable of assimilating living matter (other than mutants for an unknown reason), into themselves which they can use to increase their own abilities. They are all individual beings, but their intelligence is part of a collective (not dissimilar to Star-Trek: The Next Generation's "The Borg"). The original aim of the Phalanx was to obliterate all mutant life from the planet, but they ended up destroying far more normal humans than mutants. The Phalanx are thought to no-longer exist after their final destruction in Cable #16. The last Phalanx (Harvest) was killed by Blink (See 4.0) in X-Men (vol. 2) #37.

6) Who is/was (Acquiantences/Neutral)

6.1 - Gail Edgerton

Real name : Gail Edgerton
Characteristics: Female, brown hair, parapelegic
Age: ?
Nationality: British
Gail and Chamber had a relationship in the past, before Jonathon's powers manifested themselves. She was apparently present at the time of Chambers first manifestation and was paralyzed by the accident. Shortly afterwards, Jonathon left her without a word. She presumably is a human and resents the accident that left her paralyzed. She fell under Emplate's control for a while to exact revenge on Chamber, but turned against Emplate in the end.

9) What is Generation Next?

Generation Next was a four issue crossover that happened when all the X-Books crossed over to the Age Of Apocalypse. Generation Next was the name of the team given to an alternate reality's version of Generation-X. The Alternate Reality came about when Professor Xavier's son Legion went back in time and accidentally killed Professor Xavier. This prompted the Age of Apocalypse, where Apocalypse ruled the world.

The team did not exist is it does in this reality because Charles Xavier never founded the team. Instead, Magneto formed the team with headmasters Peter and Katya Rasputin. The team consisted of Chamber, Husk, Skin, Vincente, Mondo, and Know-It-All (presumably Monet).

8) When was Gen-X first seen?

The appearance of the Gen-X team in current continuity has been:

9) Where do the Gen-X team call home?

The Massachusetts Academy, founded in 1700 as a boarding school, was formerly one of the most prestigious private high schools in the United States, with a total enrollment of approximately 1,000 students. In recent years, the Academy was purchased by the Hellfire Club. It continued to operate as a prep school, with Emma Frost serving as the Chairman and Headmistress. At the same time, underground facilities on campus were used as a secret training facility for the Hellions. When Emma Frost became comatose (following her battle with a mutant known as Fitzroy and the Sentinels), control of the Academy was transferred to Professor Xavier. The property is no longer being used as a leading prep school, but is employed solely for the training and education of Gen-X students.

The new school has replaced the "Danger-Room" training area of the New York academy, with "The worlds only fully operational bio-sphere" as Banshee puts it, or "Danger Grotto" as Jubilee puts it. (Banshee/Jubilee, Gen-X #1). The school also hosts similar technological capabilities to the X-Men HQ in

10) Miscellaneous Information

It unfortunately does not look as if Blink from the Alter-X time-line will cross over into current continuity and "re-join" the Generation X team. She was a character with a lot of promise, but looks as if she may just be dropped.

According to the Gen-X Ashcan, Chamber will at some stage gain a device designed by Forge of X-Factor, which using Chambersa bio-energy as a "power source" will give him the capability of flight using it's rocket-pack like design.
